Ashy Weekend

So Jogja is covered with volcanic ashes today. Everybody seems to play with the snow ashes as if it's Christmas but I'm stucked at home studying for Block 2.1 exam on Monday. Anyway, this volcanic ash is literally a pain in the ass eye and I have to clean my leg whenever I step in or out of the house. On the bright side, now all the houses in my neighbourhood are as dirty as mine so my next-door neighbour will stop bugging me to clean the front porch for at least a while until all the ashes are washed away by rain or blown to my neighbour's house away by the wind.

After the exam on Monday, I'll need to find new goals in my life. I mean, I've survived the Mount Merapi eruption and most importantly finished watching all the episodes of "How I Met Your Mother", what else is there to accomplish? Cleaning up all the volcanic ashes in Jogja perhaps?

Earth Hour

I believe most of us observed the Earth Hour three days ago from 8.30 to 9.30 p.m. local time. So, during that one hour, many of us thought we've reduced the electricity consumption and thus reducing carbon dioxide emission. Way to go, we were just few steps away from tackling global warming.

Here's a catch, the electricity company couldn't just switch on and off the generator easily so we couldn't expect them to shut down the generator for that one hour because after that people will start using electricity again and restarting a generator is not as easy as starting a car.  Therefore, fuel was still being burnt and carbon dioxide was released just to keep the generator on standby mode. According to my friend who's working in Siemens power plant, it's like putting a car in neutral gear, the engine was still running but the car wasn't moving. The same concept applied, the generator was still running but no electricity was produced.

It's true that we might save some money because we consumed less energy. Maybe we saved like, let's say, RM 3 during Earth Hour and we used RM 2 to buy some cheap candles from RM 2 stores to light up our house, so in total we saved RM 1. While we were busy burning our RM 2 candles, thus producing more carbon dioxide, TNB was cursing because they need to bear the loss of the unused energy.

But hey, money is not an issue here and Earth Hour is never about saving RM 1 and make TNB goes bankrupt. It's to create awareness towards the need to act on climate change. Besides participating in this highly-publicized Earth Hour (although it doesn't help much), here are some things we can do to reduce global warming:

-  Replace incandescent light bulb (the one still uses tungsten filament which produces orange color light) with   compact fluorescent light bulb (the one can be bought in Carrefour, Philips is a good brand)
-  Do not leave electrical appliances on standby mode, unplug when not in use
-  Use less hot water (hot water is a luxury in Indonesia so we rarely get to use it anyway)
-  Reduce, reuse, recycle (how many of us reuse plastic bags and recycle anyway?)
-  Plant tree (is it really necessary? P/s: The cactus tree that you put in your room as decoration is not counted)
-  Move away your fridge or freezer (Fridge or freezer consumes more energy when put beside a cooker or boiler. Don't really know how's the mechanism but it's a fact)
-  Have less children? (Read this on STAR newspaper few years back. Don't know true or not)
-  and etc...(there're a lot, lazy to list all)

Actually there are a lot of small and simple stuffs we can do to reduce global warming like bringing used plastic back to supermarket (but quite embarrassing la). It depends on us to do it or not.

P/s: Mango just ran past me. She's so smelly~

        New Look

So I've changed the layout of my blog after hours of browsing for templates and contemplating others' opinions. In the process, I became pening and rambang mata seeing so many different designs. At last, I finally get bored and settled down with this owl theme. It's a nocturnal creature. Me too:)
Unfortunately, after all the hard work, I accidentally deleted all my widgets including my 'feng shui fish'. FML

        My Advice

        To those taking exam,

         STOP (maybe not entirely) praying!
        &
        START studying!

God help those who help themselves

        but,
the biggest help is from yourself.

        Quality vs Quantity

Today, I came across an article about our latest SPM results. To my surprise (I know I shouldn't be), nearly 8000 students got straight A's. I mean I know the number will be huge but not that HUGE! 8000 is like holy shit! Get what I mean?

Anyway, this year the grading system has changed. Instead of A1 and A2, now we have three categories of A's; A+, A and A-. So, to be fair, there are only 214 students who got straight A+'s. But, what the heck, an A is still an A, be it A+ or A-.
With this new grading system, I think we can imagine how our future grades will look like. There will be no B's, C's, D's or F's. Instead, you'll get A++, A+, A, A+-, A- and A--. Huh, confusing rite? But, who cares, still full of A's.

I think it's time for the government to tell their students that they aren't that smart after all. Of all the people I know, I think only Hanafiah Semat can have the cheek to call himself "smart" regardless of the grades he gets (pun intended). So, stop deceiving them by giving them A- instead of B. The truth may be ugly but it's better than giving false impression to students that they're actually one heck of a genius. To improve, first we must admit that we still can improve. If we get A's all the time, that means there's little room for improvement coz we are near "excellent". This system will make our SPM certificate even more worthless than a toilet paper (toilet paper is not worthless, I'm just using it as a comparison). At least we can wipe our butt using toilet paper. Although I don't use toilet paper, but that's a different story.

When I left secondary school, I thought the system was already screwed but after seeing this, I think it has more potential to be "screwed-ier" (no such word but you get what I meant). I mean come on, for most of you who got "excellent" SPM result, you do have to admit that you are not that smart after all. Maybe a bit smart, but not excellently smart.

Huh, if anyone of you who got straight A's but do not agree with me and think you are very smart, you may join "Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader?" and see if you can win a million bucks. :P
